CHANCELLOR REEVES VISIBLY UPSET AT PARLIAMENT – Opposition Leader Badenoch says Labour MPs regard Reeves as ‘toast’
There were emotional scenes in Parliament, as Chancellor Rachel Reeves was seen wiping away a tear during Prime Minister’s Questions.
The moment came as Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch sharply criticised Labour’s U-turn on welfare cuts, accusing the party of backtracking under pressure and questioning whether Reeves would remain in post until the next election.
Badenoch claimed Labour MPs had described Reeves as “toast,” and pressed Sir Keir Starmer to publicly back his chancellor — a question he did not directly answer.
Despite the tension, Downing Street moved quickly to dismiss speculation of a reshuffle, with officials insisting Reeves is “going nowhere.”
A spokesperson for the chancellor called it a personal matter, confirming that Reeves would be continuing her work from Downing Street this afternoon.
The heated exchange followed Labour’s decision to abandon planned welfare cuts after a significant backbench rebellion — a move that has triggered debate both inside and outside the Commons.
