STARMER STEPS DOWN AS PRIME MINISTER – Labour leader says successor will be chosen by September
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced he will resign, with a new Labour leader and prime minister expected to be in place by the time Parliament returns in September.
The decision comes less than two years after Starmer led Labour to a landslide election victory, ending years of political turbulence. In a statement, he said he would fully support whoever succeeds him as party leader.
Pressure on Starmer had intensified in recent months amid falling approval ratings and growing unrest within Labour. The situation escalated further last week when Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham won the Makerfield by-election, securing a return to Westminster and fuelling speculation about a potential leadership bid.
Burnham’s victory over Reform UK has been seen by many Labour MPs as a sign that the party may need a new direction. Attention will now turn to the upcoming leadership contest, which is expected to shape the future of both the Labour Party and the government.
