STARMER TO PUBLISH SPY CASE STATEMENT – PM vows transparency as witness statement on dropped UK spy case set for release
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed that Downing Street will publish a key witness statement linked to the government’s decision to drop spying charges against two British men.
Addressing Parliament, Starmer said the statement from Deputy National Security Adviser Matthew Collins would be released after a short review to ensure sensitive information is handled appropriately.
The Crown Prosecution Service said it had no objection to the publication since the case against Christopher Cash and Christopher Berry is no longer active.
The espionage charges were dropped last month after prosecutors ruled there was insufficient evidence to continue. Both men have consistently denied wrongdoing.
In a fiery exchange during Prime Minister’s Questions, Starmer dismissed Conservative accusations of political interference, saying the collapse of the case stemmed from the previous government’s failure to update national security laws.
He emphasised that Collins, described as “a civil servant of the utmost integrity,” acted independently and that no ministers or advisers influenced the process.
