UK FOREIGN MINISTER PLANS SANCTIONS – Cooper says Britain must act on human rights abuses in Sudan

Britain is preparing to tighten pressure on warring factions in Sudan.

Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper told Parliament on Tuesday that she has instructed officials to draw up new sanctions targeting individuals and entities involved in human rights violations in the conflict-torn nation.

Cooper said the international community has “turned its back on Sudan for far too long,” and stressed the urgent need for a ceasefire as violence escalates.

The war erupted in 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The RSF’s recent takeover of Al-Fashir—one of Sudan’s largest cities—has heightened fears of mass killings, while both sides have stepped up drone strikes in recent months.

Cooper added that Britain may need to deploy teams to investigate atrocities and ensure perpetrators are held accountable.

The UK already imposed sanctions last year on three Sudanese-linked companies accused of funding armed groups behind the war.
