UK SET TO BAN SMOKING FOR NEXT GENERATION – Landmark law targets youth smoking and vaping
Britain is set to introduce one of the world’s toughest anti-smoking laws, as plans to ban future generations from buying cigarettes move into force this week.
The Tobacco and Vapes Bill, expected to receive royal assent within days, will make it illegal for anyone born on or after January 1, 2009 to ever legally purchase tobacco.
The policy introduces a rolling age ban, meaning the legal smoking age will rise every year, in a bid to phase out smoking entirely over time.
Ministers say the move could dramatically reduce smoking rates and ease pressure on the NHS, while also tightening rules around vaping, including marketing and product displays aimed at young people.
But public reaction is mixed. Some welcome the crackdown on youth smoking, while others argue it may be difficult to enforce and could push users towards alternative routes.
Health experts say the long-term success of the policy will depend not just on tobacco restrictions, but also on how effectively vaping products are regulated in the years ahead.
