Just when it looked as if Manchester United had found their mojo again after all this time, a stunning late free-kick from Michael Olise denied Erik Ten Hag’s side a 10th successive win in all competitions and second place in the Premier League. A first-half goal from Bruno Fernandes had seemed to provide yet more compelling evidence that the club that have been crowned champions of England more than any other could be serious title contenders once more. With a trip to face Arsenal at the Emirates to come on Sunday, United trail the leaders by eight points having played a game…
Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis plans to introduce legislation that would forever reject COVID-19 mask and vaccine mandates in the Sunshine State. If passed, the law will prohibit schools and private businesses from requiring masks or vaccination proof — measures that took hold in several parts of the country amid the coronavirus pandemic. The legislation would also shield medical doctors from being disciplined by their employers for expressing dissenting views on the coronavirus vaccine and its safety. DeSantis unveiled the new proposed legislation Tuesday, appearing with Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo to condemn COVID-related mandates. Ladapo has vaulted to national prominence…
A former CIA officer who signed an open letter attempting to discredit reports about Hunter Biden’s laptop ahead of the 2020 election admitted that most of what was discovered on the laptop is real. Douglas Wise, a former CIA officer and Defense Intelligence Agency deputy director, signed an open letter in 2020 that the New York Post’s October 2020 report had “all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.” About 50 other former U.S. intelligence officials, including former CIA Director John Brennan and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, signed the document. Over the past weekend, however, Wise conceded that…
New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern has said she is resigning, in a shock announcement that came as she confirmed a national election for October this year. At the party’s annual caucus meeting on Thursday, Ardern said she “no longer had enough in the tank” to do the job. “It’s time,” she said. “I’m leaving, because with such a privileged role comes responsibility. The responsibility to know when you are the right person to lead and also when you are not. I know what this job takes. And I know that I no longer have enough in the tank to do it…
The Department of Defense indicated on Tuesday it is not going to consider backpay for troops discharged due to having refused to take a COVID-19 vaccine amid mandates that were recently lifted. At a press briefing, Pentagon spokesman Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder was asked by a reporter whether the Pentagon was still “actively exploring” providing backpay or reinstatement to the separated service members. “In terms of back-pay, you’re talking specifically on COVID vaccination? What I would tell you is right now, we are not currently pursuing back-pay to service members who were dismissed for refusing to take the COVID vaccination,” Ryder responded. He did not provide…
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Jan. 17 that he was “surprised” to learn that classified documents had been discovered at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement in Washington, where President Joe Biden previously had an office. Blinken served as Biden’s national security adviser when he was vice president and the two have remained close since Biden became president. He worked as managing director of the Penn Center in 2018 when it officially opened. “Just as you heard from President Biden about a week ago I was surprised to learn that there were any government records taken to the Penn Biden…
Britain’s battery sector has been delivered some unexpected good news, after an Australian billionaire told Sky News he will be opening an advanced battery plant in Oxfordshire later this year, creating up to 300 new jobs. Andrew Forrest, the founder of the Australian iron ore giant Fortescue, said he was expanding operations at Williams Advanced Engineering, the technical offshoot of the famous Formula 1 team, which he bought last year. The new plant in Kidlington will work on batteries and fuel cells which could be used in heavy goods vehicles in the coming decades. The news comes barely 24 hours…
The rate of inflation eased to 10.5%, according to official figures – down from 10.7% in November. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the reduced cost of motor fuels led to the decline in the core consumer prices index (CPI) measure of inflation along with cheaper clothing and footwear, and recreation and culture. Pushing inflation up, the ONS added, were higher prices in restaurants and hotels, food and non-alcoholic beverages. Today’s announcement is the latest signal that the UK might have seen the worst of inflation. The number is down from a 41-year high of 11.1% recorded in October
Jürgen Klopp said Liverpool’s FA Cup win at Wolves would help restore belief around Anfield and give him a selection dilemma for Chelsea’s visit in the Premier League on Saturday. The Liverpool manager made eight changes from the woeful weekend defeat at Brighton for the third round replay and was rewarded with a more compact, resolute display capped by Harvey Elliott’s superb winning goal. Klopp admitted his team could ill-afford a repeat of their performances at Brighton and Brentford, where defeats damaged Liverpool’s prospects of a top-four finish, and would regain confidence from a first win in 2023. “We know we only…
Barcelona were crowned Spanish Super Cup champions after goals from Gavi, Robert Lewandowski and Pedri earned them a 3-1 win over bitter rivals Real Madrid in Saudi Arabia. Barcelona were dominant in every aspect of the game and took advantage of three mistakes by Real Madrid to score. They took the lead in the 33rd minute after Real defender Antonio Ruediger passed across his own area to Barca’s Sergio Busquets, who began a move that ended with Gavi all alone inside the box to score with a precise left-foot strike. Real Madrid, who had no shots on target in the…
