The Bank of England has raised interest rates by 0.5 percentage points to 3.5% in an effort to combat double-digit inflation that has caused a widespread cost of living crisis. Members of the central bank’s monetary policy committee voted to increase the cost of borrowing after the consumer prices index (CPI) in November showed annual inflation of 10.7%. The move takes UK rates to the highest level since October 2008, and comes despite expectations that the UK is falling into a long recession. However, it marked a slowdown in the pace of rate rises, after the MPC increased borrowing costs…
The head of the Royal College of Nursing has accused the health secretary of turning his back on nursing. Pat Cullen told reporters that she believes the public backs the strikes, saying, “The public absolutely understands why nurses are doing this today. “Standing out in the cold this morning – put out in the cold by this government, with the door shut on them. “This is a tragic day for nursing, it’s a tragic day for the NHS.” Regarding Health Secretary Steve Barclay, Ms Cullen said: “I went down last week full of hope to Steve Barclay’s office after he…
France set up a heavyweight World Cup final against Argentina after an early goal by Theo Hernandez and a late one from Randal Kolo Muani ended battling Morocco’s dream run via an action-packed 2-0 semi-final victory. U.S. President Joe Biden hosted a White House dinner for visiting heads of state from the African Union and their spouses. During the dinner, Biden addressed what he called America’s “original sin” – the enslavement of millions of people – and honoured their descendants and the broader African diaspora community in the United States. “Our people lie at the heart of the deep and profound connection that forever binds Africa and the United States together,” he said. “We remember the stolen men and women and children were brought to our shores in chains, subjected to unimaginable cruelty.” Before the dinner,…
