FARAGE FACES BINFACE IN CLACTON CONTEST – Nigel Farage has admitted that he was caught off guard
Nigel Farage has admitted that he was caught off guard by the major political parties boycotting the Clacton by-election.
The Reform UK leader resigned as an MP this week and declared he would stand in the subsequent vote after claiming a sleaze investigation into his finances was being used as a political tool against him. Nigel Farage received £5m from Reform UK mega donor Christopher Harborne before he became an MP, it has emerged.
In a surprise move, Labour, the Tories, the Liberal Democrats, the Greens and Restore Britain all refused to stand against Mr Farage, meaning he faces a weeks-long contest against the novelty candidate Count Binface and a handful of minor parties.
On Wednesday night, the Reform leader admitted he had been wrong-footed by all the main parties by refusing to challenge him.
Asked whether he had considered the possibility of being the only serious candidate, Mr Farage told the Daily Mail: “No, of course not. Why would they [not contest]? It’s a real election.”
